Anne Frank
by Samantha S.

Shadow Life by Barry Denenberg is about the life of a thirteen year old Jewish girl whose life changed because of the war. Anne and her family went into hiding on July 5th 1942 at a warehouse that had a secret annex. Anne's family, the Franks, and the Van Daan family were the original seven people who were in hiding. Later on, Mr. Dussell came to hide with them.
They were to remain quiet from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. All of them lived like this for the next two years. Anne named her diary "Kitty," which she received for her thirteenth birthday. With a remarkably strong spirit she recorded in the diary the events and personalities of everyone. She also explored deep within herself looking at her two sides - the silly, carefree Anne and the Anne who was sensitive and struggling to be taken seriously. She decorated the diary with pictures of her family. In the two years that Anne was in hiding she became a woman and also had her first kiss with a boy that lived with her, Peter. She wrote short stories and every thought about the war.
On August 4th 1944 the Nazi Police discovered the secret annex. They were taken to Auschwitz in Poland, but Anne and her sister were taken to Bergen-Belsen in Germany in October of 1944.
Anne Frank died of typhus in March of 1945.
