Hurricanes
by Jaiden P.

A hurricane is a very bad tropical storm. They form in the southern Atlantic Ocean. Three things must happen for a hurricane to form:
Stage 1: A cycle of warm, humid ocean air
Stage 2: Converging winds at the surface if the water and higher altitudes
Stage 3: A difference in air pressure between the surface and high altitude winds.

It can take from hours to several days for a thunderstorm to turn into a hurricane. Experts say the whole process of forming a hurricane is not fully understood, even today.

Hurricanes have classifications. They are classified from one to five based on how fast the wind is in the hurricane. Below is the classification:

Category One Two Three Four Five
Miles per hour 74-95 96-110 111-130 131-155 >155

Hurricane season is from June 1 to November 30. Some famous hurricanes have been named Camille, Andrew and Donna. One of the deadliest hurricanes in history was Katrina, category five. She was the most expensive and in the top five most deadly hurricanes in the history of the United States. It hit the Gulf Coast on August 23, 2005. If you live on a part of the country that has hurricanes, it is important to have an emergency for your family.
