Regional Animal Habitats

Elephant Seal
by Ava T.

There are two different kinds of elephant seals; northern and southern. They get their name from the great size of their bodies and the large nose of the adult male. The males weigh up to 4500 pounds and are up to 15 feet long, but the females weigh up to 1500 pounds and are up to ten feet long.  To find their food they dive for about 20 minutes to a depth of 1700 feet. They eat different kinds of animals, such as octopuses, skates and squid. Females can give birth at the age of 3-4 and can live about 20 years. Males can live about 14 years.  They are the only mammals that make 2 migrations each year. The elephant seal is the largest species of sea.
