Opossum
by Austin S.
Opossum are the only living marsupial native to North America. They are born the size of a bee and grow to the size of a cat. Their fur is gray to black in color. Opossum can grasp branches with their hairless tail like a monkey, but cannot hang. Opossum eat insects, snails, rodents, and all kinds of fruits and plants. They are able to live wherever food and shelter exists. Lifespan is about 2-4 years. When frightened or attacked, they can hiss or growl and show their 50 sharp teeth. They play "possum" to make their enemies think that they are dead. Opossum are helpful by cleaning dead animals on the road, and control rodent and insect populations. Their predators are cars, dogs, cats, owls, and large wildlife.
