Black Bears
by Alex C.
Black bears are large mammals. They are mostly harmless bears that live mostly in forests, swamps, and desert scrub. These solitary mammals are found across North America. American Black Bears are up to 6 feet long. They can be as heavy as 300 pounds. Black bears may hibernate up to 7 months in the north where food is scarce between September and April. Some do not hibernate at all in the South where food is available all year-round. Bears that hibernate for a long period reduce their metabolism more than do bears that hibernate in the South.
