PHYSICAL EDUCATION MISSION STATEMENT:

The mission of a K-8 Physical Education program is to provide learning experiences in which ALL students will be able to develop into effective problem solvers and capable decision makers, as these skills apply to the appropriate fitness programs and activities in an ever changing society. The goal of this program is to instill a continuing passion for a physically active lifestyle for a lifetime.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION PHILOSOPHY:

We believe that all students can develop healthy lifestyles and benefit from learning experiences through comprehensive programs and practices, that effectively impact physical, mental and social well being.

Physical Education at Pinecrest is safe, fast paced, structured and most importantly fun. The lower school children learn basic motor skills such as running, skipping, hopping, and balance through a variety of exercises, drills, and games, as well as the importance of listening, rules on the yard, and sportsmanship. All of the skills and lessons lead to Pee-Wee Sports (grades 1-3), where students will have the ability to participate in intramural sports like basketball and soccer, after school, in games where the final score is not tallied and the measure of success is through the smiles on their faces.

The upper school students learn social initiative, cooperative, and strategic games using batons, flags, balls, beanbags, and many other instructional tools. They are taught the value of fair play, sportsmanship, and teamwork. They also participate in the President’s Challenge, a national awards program that has three separate programs to encourage America’s youth to be active, healthy and fit.

Grades 3 through 8 are required to dress for P.E. The P.E. uniforms are available in the uniform store at a cost of $10 per item, or $20 for the set.

When your child is sick or unable to participate in P.E. class, please send a signed note to your child’s coach that day. If your child is going to be excused for more than 3 days, we will need a doctor’s note. Any students who do not have a written note from their parent/guardian or the school nurse will be expected to participate in P.E. We need to have children participate as much as possible in order to accurately assess their learning abilities and skill improvement.

Please send your child to school in rubber soled tennis shoes to prevent injury to them and their peers. Dress shoes and boots will not be permitted during P.E. If you have any comments, questions, or concerns please feel free to stop by or call the Athletic Office at (818) 988-5565. We look forward to having a safe, productive, and fun year.
