Question: "Is it possible for caramelized sugar to be
used as a window?" While doing my research, I learned
that caramelized sugar hardens into a glass like form. So
as the sugar molecules boil in the water, the molecules
expand, letting water in the empty space. Then as the
caramelized sugar hardens, the sugar molecules compact
together, squeezing all the moisture out, letting it
harden. I also learned that boiling the sugar to a certain
degree will cause it to harden clear. That is 320
degrees.
Hypothesis: If the sugar has the density
and thickness of the glass, it is possible for caramelized
sugar to be used as a window.
While doing my
experiment, I discovered that the sugar glass has the
same characteristics as ordinary glass. The strength is
about the same. The density is about the same. The
features can pass as a temporary shower door, but not an
ordinary house window because it is translucent and
cannot withstand water. In my experiment I learned that
caramelized sugar can be used as windows. But, only for
temporary uses, because it will melt in the heat and in
water. It can also be eaten by other people.
