Attendance

Regular attendance is essential to successful school achievement.  Pinecrest students are expected to be on time each day.  The campus opens at 6:30 AM for childcare. Classes begin at 8:30 AM for Kindergarten – 8th Grade.  Please make every effort to drop off your child to school before 8:20 AM. If a student is late (after 8:30 AM) both the parent and the student MUST check into the office and receive a late slip before being admitted to class.

Students who are absent due to illness have one extra day for each day absent to make up work, beginning on the day they return to school. To request class work or homework for an absent student (Grades K-5), call the school office before 10:00 AM. A homework packet will be available after 3:30 PM in the office.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

When a Middle School student is absent, they are given an extra day for each day absent to make up any missing class work.  The teachers will keep the missing assignments and/or handouts in a bin or drawer in their classrooms labeled “Absent Work”.  It is the responsibility of the student to pick up their assignments when they return to school.  The office is no longer responsible for collecting work from the teachers.  In the event of a pre-arranged absence (i.e. trip, high school orientation/entrance exams, etc.), please let the teachers know well in advance so that may prepare packets of missing work ahead of time.

Students may not attend a sports activity or nighttime event unless they are in school by 9:30 AM on the day of the event.  (Special circumstances need to be approved by the principal.)

Justified Absences include:

  • Illness
  • Medical appointments
  • Attendance at the funeral of a family member
  • Court appearance with verification
  • Other special circumstances approved by the principal

Absences for any reason other than those listed above are NOT considered legal by the California Administrative Code and therefore are NOT justified absences.  Teachers may provide make up work for justified absences only, and are not required to provide make-up work for unjustified absences.  (Vacations or other personal business are NOT considered justified absences.)

ALL absences – justified or otherwise – are counted on each report card.

Tardy Policy:
It is extremely important that students arrive at school early enough to have ample time each morning to prepare for the day ahead.  Frequent tardies often result in difficulties with assignments and lower grades.  A student arriving late will miss important information and disrupt the entire class.  Parents will be notified after every third tardy with a letter requiring a parent signature.  Three or more tardies per quarter will certainly affect your citizenship grades and may lower your subject grades.

  • 3/6/9 Tardies  - Warning & Letter Home
  • 10th Tardy – Suspension
  • 14th Tardy – Suspension/Probation

All tardies are unexcused unless the student brings a medical note from a doctor or dentist.  Tardies due to traffic issues are unexcused.

A Physicians Releaseis required for any injury that requires medical attention (stitches, head injury, fracture, orthopedic appliance usage, etc.) and any communicable disease (rashes of any kind, measles, mumps, conjunctivitis, impetigo etc.).  Students will not be allowed to return to class without a release from their physician.   If a student is sent home because of a fever, vomiting or diarrhea, temperature should be normal for 24 hours and there should be no vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours before the child returns to school. Please see the Nurse’s letter in this handbook for more information on Student Illness.

Leaving Campus
After arrival at school, students must remain on campus until picked up by a parent or persons that you have listed as authorized to pick up your child.  Students must be signed out in the office when leaving before 3:00 PM (3:30 PM for Middle School).

Students are released only to authorized persons as listed on enrollment papers.  You may send or fax the names of any additional persons you are authorizing to collect your child to the office.

The campus closes at 6:30 p.m.  A late care fee of $5.00 plus $1.00 per minute is charged after this time.

Closed Campus
Remember, Pinecrest is a closed campus.  This means that when students arrive at school they must stay on campus at all times, including lunchtime, unless they are released to their parents or other permissible adult.  Parents must check-in to the Main Office during academic hours (8:30 – 3:00 for Kindergarten and 8:30 – 3:30 for 1st through 8th Grades) for a Visitor’s Pass.
