Honor Council School of Excellence
awarded by the National Association of
Elementary School Principals

We are proud to announce that the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) has awarded Pinecrest Valencia with the American Student Council Award for the 2007-2008 academic year. This is the sixth year in a row that our student council has been recognized with this award. Our school was one of the 50 schools throughout the United States and Canada chosen for recognition.

The Honor Student Council Excellence Award is given to the student councils for outstanding participation in the following areas: community service and involvement, school climate, citizenship, and student leadership. Together with student council advisor, Ms. James, and the participation of school families and staff, our student council has achieved this wonderful status and award.

We congratulate our students for such an important award. We are very proud of their efforts and accomplishments.

The following letter, written by our Student Council President, Krishna L. expresses the commitment by our student council members. This letter was submitted as part of the application for this award.

March 22, 2008

Dear National Association of Elementary School Principals:

My name is Kirshna L. and I’ve had the proud privilege of representing Pinecrest Valencia for the second year in a row. Last year I was the Student council Vice President and this year I was honored to hold the position as Student Council President.
In student council, we get to do many exciting things that help our community. On Earth Day, we planted a tree on the playground. Then there is Red Ribbon Week where many people come in and tell us why it’s not good go smoke and drugs. This year we added the “healthy choices program.” In the healthy choices program, we’ve formed a walk club and we are working on creating a healthy snacks cookbook. During the year, there are food drives for the local food pantry and we always participate in the Santa Clarita Kids Against Hunger Program. In December, we have a toy drive and in the spring, we have an Easter Basket and stuffed animal drive for local foster care children. We adopted three military units in Iraq and sent them much needed care packages. Ms. James, our student council advisor, has received several emails from the troops. Then there is the visit to the Senior Center where we serve snacks and cheer them up with our fabulous entertainment. I personally like the food drives the best because food is a necessity.
I think that it’s fun to be in student council, because we all get to make a difference in our community. It has made me a better person and I will continue to make a difference in our community in or out of student council.
On behalf of the student council, we would like to thank you for considering our application for the Honor Student Council School of Excellence award.

Sincerely,

Kirshna L.
Pinecrest Valencia Student Council President
