ELEMENTARY PROGRAM
When you picture your child's future ...
You see endless possibilities.
So do we!
Our Students Are ...
Readers, Writers and Communicators.
Our curriculum includes a strong core program of phonics, reading, spelling, handwriting, oral and written language, literature and creative expression.
Scientists, Mathematicians, and Explorers.
Whether it's growing silk worms in a classroom center, or dissecting squid at the Catalina Island Marine Institute, our students learn first-hand about the world we live in.
Our Students Are ...
Good Citizens, Wise Decision-Makers, and Critical Thinkers.
From community helpers to international leaders, from recycling our newspapers to protecting our forests, we learn how our personal choices affect the health of ourselves and our world.
Athletes and Artists, Poets and Performers, Inventors and Investigators.
Outside the academic day, our students have many opportunities to pursue special interests through our inter-scholastic sports program, individual music lessons, Scout groups, after-school Discovery Classes, and service to others through Student Government and grade-level outreach programs.

We participate in COMPETITIONS such as the Science Fair, National Spelling Bee and the National Geography Bee.
Our Dance, Drama and Music students PERFORM IN RECITAL at every year.

Our PINECREST COURSE OF STUDY is sequential, accelerated, and exceeds the requirements of the State of California in every subject area. We are members of NIPSA, the National Independent Private Schools Association.

Our basic textbooks and workbooks have all been approved by the State Board of Education. Our students also have access to many manipulative materials, interest centers, science equipment, a state-of-the-art Library with on-line reference capability, a fully equipped Computer Lab, an Art Room, a Spanish Language Lab, and a Music Room, all staffed by specialists in these areas. Our learning environment extends beyond the campus with field trips to Civic Arts Plaza performances, the Stagecoach Inn, the Chumash Interpretive Center, Pacific tide pools, and many nearby museums and points of interest.
High Quality Staff
We select our classroom teachers for their ability to teach and inspire children as well as their experience, academic qualifications and credentials. Applications for admission are accepted beginning March 15 for the following school year. Admission requirements include a personal interview with parent and child, including previous scholastic records, test scores and recommendations. An evaluation will then be made by the interviewing administrator as to appropriate placement, as follows:
Junior Kindergarten (offered according to need and interest): Designed for children who would benefit from an additional year between Preschool and Kindergarten. Allows young five-year-olds to grow in readiness skills at their own pace, and parallels public school kindergarten.
Kindergarten: Appropriate for those children who are either ready for a more challenging academic program or who have already completed a year of kindergarten and are in need of a transitional year before first grade.
First Grade: Children are grouped developmentally according to readiness levels in motor skills, attention span, social maturation, etc. Ability groups for reading are formed within each class.
Second Grade: In preparation for the middle-grade curriculum, classes are grouped heterogeneously. Reading ability groups, plus intervention and pull-out programs provide additional support and enrichment for qualifying students.
Third and Fourth Grades: Classes are grouped heterogeneously, with ability groups for reading and math. Team Teaching is introduced, with each staff member specializing in either Science, Social Studies or Core Literature.
Fifth and Sixth Grades: Team Teaching is expanded with each teaching specialist instructing in their subject area, ie. English, Science, Social Studies, Math. Students are grouped heterogeneously, except for Math, where ability groups continue.
Pinecrest School accepts children from all religious, social, ethnic and racial backgrounds who meet entrance requirements. As a structured school, Pinecrest requires proper behavior and dress (Pinecrest Attire/Uniforms) from its students.
Our academic year begins the Tuesday after Labor Day in September and usually extends through the third Friday in June. A complete summer camp program is offered during July and August.
