We have day and night because our planet Earth is always spinning around. When the earth moves towards the sun, it is light and we have daytime. As it moves away from the sun it becomes dark and we have nighttime.

There are twelve hours of light and twelve hours of darkness every day. When it is daytime in the United States, it is nighttime in China.
