The California quail (also known as the Valley quail) is the state bird of California. As part of the 4th grade's study of California, the students made these beautiful paper maché quail and then researched facts about our state bird.

    The California quail is a small, plump, black bird with a short beak.

    The California quail can be found from Southern Oregon to Southern California and to the east to Nevada.

    California quail live in grasslands, foothills, woodlands, canyons and the edge of the deserts.

    They like areas of deserts. They like areas with lots of brush.

    They feed in flowers every morning.

    Both male and female have a black beak.

    The male has a grey chest, and a brown beak and wings. The female quail has a grey or brown head and a lighter speckled chest and belly. Both male and female have a curved black crown on top of their heads. The male's crown is sometimes larger than the females.

    They live in coveys from 10 to 200 birds.

    Quails roost in trees to stay out of danger.

    Femaile quails can lay between 12-16 cream speckled eggs.

    The female incubates the eggs for about three weeks. Chciks leave the nest shortly after birth.
