Illness

An inevitable part of the school year is the arrival of everyday school illnesses, such as colds, flu, fevers and coughs.

Here are some guidelines to follow regarding these problems:

Coughs & Colds

Cough and cold medication may be brought to school and left with the Nurse to be administered. If your child has a cough with mucus or a discharge from the nose take your child to a doctor in order that medication can be prescribed. A child should be kept home for a day or two depending on the severity of the cough/cold in order for the child to recover and to lessen the chances of other children becoming infected.

Fever

If your child has been sick and has a temperature of anything about 99.0 degrees, do not send your child to school. His/her temperature should be normal (98.6 F) and there should be no diarrhea or vomiting for 24 hours before returning to school. If your child will be missing school due to illness, we would kindly appreciate it if you would call us to let us know.

Parents who are notified of a child's illness should make every effort to come and pick up the child as soon as possible.  If a child is too ill to be out with other children in a regular school program, the child should not be sent to school.  There are no facilities for the care of sick children.

Communicable Diseases

Ringworm (Red lesion that is round in shape and itches): Child may return to school when affected area is treated with prescribed medication & covered. Students will not be allowed to return to class without a release from their physician.

Chicken Pox: Child may usually be able to return to school 5-7 days from onset, when lesions are DRY. (Small red dots that enlarge with a white center that will flatten) Students will not be allowed to return to class without a release from their physician.

Impetigo: Child may return to school after treatment from your physician, when all areas are dry. (Sores that spread over a wide area, usually from a single sore that has become infected from touching).

Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye): Child may return to school after eye is completely clear, treatment of medication has been completed and a physician's clearance. (Eye red and with a white discharge from eye).

Lice: As many of you know, lice can be a problem for many reasons:

Children coming back from summer vacations from many different areas
Playing close with other children
Sharing of items, such as hats, jackets, or combs

We make it a practice to check for head lice frequently. You can help us by also checking your child's hair often. If you should discover lice, please notify the school.
