Pinecrest Moorpark
Summer Reading Program
The Pinecrest Moorpark Summer Reading Program begins NOW! We hope you will participate! Children can lose 30% of their reading comprehension and speed over the summer recess. Our goal is to maintain your child’s reading skills for the coming school year.
Below are links to a suggested reading list for the grade your child will be entering in September. You may choose any books appropriate for their entering grade level and ability. Local libraries, bookstores and teaching supply stores can also provide title suggestions.
Ask your child to read a paragraph from the middle of a book. If he/she struggles with 5 or more words in a paragraph, the book is too difficult. Staying within your child’s reading ability is important. We want your child to be a successful reader. You want your child to feel confident and enjoy summer reading, not be frustrated. Appropriate reading level books reinforce vocabulary and promote reading fluency.
A list of 120 high-frequency words is included for children entering first grade and a review for those entering second grade. The words help your child recognize letter patterns and sounding out new vocabulary. If your child knows “at” they will be able to extend their vocabulary with words like bat, hat and that.
A “Tell-Back” is another way for you to know what level is best. After reading 2 or 3 chapters, ask him/her to tell you about the story. Who are the main characters? What has happened so far? What do you think is going to happen? If he/she can’t answer the questions, the vocabulary has been too difficult and your child is not comprehending the story. Books should be a challenge but not frustrating.
“I’ll read to you and you read to me” is another suggestion. The book is completed at a faster pace and builds confidence. Listening to you use voice inflection will encourage your child to do the same. This makes reading much more interesting and fun.
Don’t forget non-fiction books! Many children prefer biographies, information, poetry, jokes and riddles. Books on a child’s favorite subjects are fun to read such as volcanoes, dinosaurs, hot cars, snakes, kittens, hamsters, etc.
Students completing the summer reading requirements and returning their reading journal will be recognized for their accomplishments at a special assembly in September. Children will receive a certificate and gift book from the library for being accomplished summer readers. Happy Reading Everyone!
