Classroom
The classroom teacher will address minor offenses using such strategies as individual conferences, demerits and parent notification.
Reasons for Demerits
Demerits will be given for the following reasons:
Tardiness, Gum Chewing, Dress Code Violations, Cell Phones, Inappropriate Language, Excessive Talking, Disruptive Classroom Behavior, Disrespectful Behavior, and Yard Rule Violations.
Immediate Referrals
A student may be sent immediately to the Administration Office for the following reasons: Disrespect or Harassment to teachers, staff, or students; Fighting; Stealing; Cheating; Drug possession or use on campus; Destruction or Theft of school or student property; Gang-related activity; Truancy; Possession of a weapon or potentially dangerous objects. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken which could include: Parent conference, detention, suspension, or expulsion.
Demerit Policy
If a student receives:
• 5 Demerits – Demerit Notification Letter sent home
• 10 Demerits- Conference with parents/student/vice-principal
• 12 Demerits- One-day suspension
• 15 Demerits- Disciplinary Probation
Students who receive more than 5 demerits must also attend after-school detention for each demerit received. Students may work off 5 demerits per semester and these include: Tardiness, gum/eating/drinking, dress code, inappropriate language, and talking. Demerits that may not be worked off include: disruptive classroom behavior and disrespectful behavior. It is the student’s responsibility to know how many demerits they have and to arrange a method for reducing them. Each semester, the number of demerits returns to zero for each student.
Disciplinary Probation
Once a student receives 15 demerits, a conference will be scheduled and both the parents and the student will sign a contract. This contract will serve as notice of a possible dismissal from the school unless inappropriate behavior is corrected. If a student accumulates 25 demerits during one school year, the student may be asked to leave school or not return the following year. |
