5th Graders Board the Mayflower
5th Grade Social Studies
Our 5th graders reinacted life on the Mayflower. Each student represented someone on the ship by dressing like them and acting like them the entire day. They saw first hand what it was like to have been on the voyage to the new world. The classroom was set at a chilly 40 degrees, the room was covered in black paper and trash bags and a small sector of the room provided the dark and cramped living quarters. The only thing allowed onto the ship was a feathered pencil, a journal, playing cards, a snack, and a reading book and flashlight. The children signed a Mayflower contract prior to boarding the Mayflower and pillow cases were searched prior to boarding. As they boarded, the children were greeted with high winds and high seas. The end of the day topped off with a drastic storm where winds were heavier, lighting and thunder filled the room and waves crashed upon the ship. It was a great day!!!!!
