I believe that a well structured, well managed classroom provides the best environment for successful learning.  I believe that student achievement becomes most meaningful when they are engaged in activities that tap into different learning styles and produce a challenging yet achievable outcome.  I believe that my job as the teacher is to make sure that these things are happening and to continuously assess my approach and expectations to be sure that I am being the most effective for my students needs.

I have so much fun working in the classroom with my students, hearing/seeing their excitement when they have their “ah-hah” moments.  I enjoy hearing my students’ perspectives on life- always keeps me smiling.  I also enjoy working with others that enjoy the students just as much as I do.

Most memorable or profound moment:  I have had so many wonderful memories, but one that continues to inspire me is actually from my first year of teaching.  I taught in a multi-grade classroom for “at-risk” students.  It was a tough crowd to say the least.  Honestly, as a first year teacher, I felt I may have been over my head and wasn’t sure how successful I was being at “being a teacher”.  Then, I received a note from one of my most quiet, introverted students.  In his not so legible handwriting and with his not so great spelling- he told me how much he was learning and becoming smart.  That he wasn’t smart before.  That before now he did not want to come to school, but now he liked coming and wished I could be his teacher all the time.  This note, short and sweet, reminded me of why I was a teacher.  I want to touch lives, in however small a way I can.  I want to make school a safe and successful place where even the most down-and-out child can feel “I’ve accomplished something today; I can’t wait to see what I can do tomorrow.”

When I am not teaching I enjoy spending time with family, going on road trips, reading, planning events, and going to theatrical productions.
